River or Sewer: The Story of Vrishabhavathy River in Bengaluru, Southern India

The Vrishabhavathi River river originates in Bengaluru, flows southwards to join the Arkavathy River past Byramangala. Today, it flows through the city receiving a significant amount of domestic sewage from Bangalore and industrial effluents from Peeniya Industrial area. This polluted water is then distributed to the downstream farmers as irrigation water through irrigation channels. ATREE’s research shows how weak regulation and monitoring are resulting in pollution entering the food system. Water pollution and wastewater reuse in agriculture in peri-urban Bangalore has resulted in heavy metal contamination in baby corn, mulberry and milk.
